The 1638 General Assembly

On 21 November 1638, the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland met for the first time in twenty years. It met in St Mungo's Cathedral in Glasgow. By the time is closed on 20 December, the Assembly had declared episcopacy unlawful and condemned the recently-introduced Prayer Book and Book of Canons.

The Assembly was made up of clergy, commissioners from the country's universities and ruling elders (including nobles, landowners and officials from leading burghs).
